Anacacho Orchid Tree, 2–5 ft

A genuine Texas rarity: native to roughly two counties on the Rio Grande, and it looks like something out of a Gulf Coast courtyard. Split butterfly-shaped leaves and clouds of white orchid flowers in March, then again after any real rain. Stays under twelve feet, so it actually fits a courtyard, a pool corner or a narrow side yard. Zone 8 and warmer only.

• Bloom timeline: Typically first bloom in year 2 from a 3-gallon. Ours are seedling-grown, so bloom heaviness varies plant to plant
• Shipped as: Ships leafless or nearly so in the dormant window. That is normal for this species

• Spread: 8 to 10 ft
• Growth rate: Slow to moderate, 8 to 18 in per year
• Bloom: White, fragrant, March into April, and it reblooms after summer rain

Where it grows

• USDA zones: 8 to 10. It will freeze to the ground in zone 7 and may not return
• Texas planting window: November 1 to February 28
• Native status: True Texas native, and a narrowly endemic one. Bauhinia lunarioides is native to the Anacacho Mountains of Kinney and Uvalde counties and adjacent Coahuila. Buying nursery-propagated stock is how you enjoy this species without pressuring a wild population
• Soil: Alkaline, rocky, must drain sharply
• Sun: Full sun to light shade
• Water: Very low once established

• Cold: Below about 15F expect dieback. In zone 8a plant it against a south wall

• Do not: Do not put it on a lawn irrigation zone

If we need more than 30 days, your order is cancelled and refunded automatically unless you tell us to hold it. Refunds go back to your original card within 7 business days.
