Sawtooth Oak Tree, 3–5 ft

What you receive: a 3 to 5 ft sawtooth oak in a 3-gallon pot, caliper under one inch, a young liner-stage tree with its first years of root establishment already done. Not a landscape-size tree; the years you are buying are the ones already in the pot.

Deer hunters plant sawtooth oak for one reason: acorns, early, and a lot of them. It drops mast in September and October, weeks ahead of your native oaks, right when you need a food source, once the tree is established: first acorns typically arrive 5 to 8 years from planting, not this season on the property. This is a wildlife-management tree and an East Asian species, not a Texas native. We are direct about that. One Louisiana run of about 300 trees. We sell only what grades out to the printed spec, and the counter shows what is left.

• Growth rate: Fast, roughly 2 to 3 ft per year once established
• Form: Broad rounded crown, bristle-tipped sawtooth leaves, tan winter marcescence

Where it grows

• USDA zones: 5 to 9
• Texas planting window: October 15 to February 28. Ideal: November through January
• Native status: NOT a Texas native. Quercus acutissima is native to East Asia. It naturalizes in parts of the Southeast and is on watch lists in several states. Plant it as a managed wildlife and food-plot tree on land you control. If you want a native mast oak instead, buy our Chinquapin Oak or Texas Red Oak. We would rather tell you that than sell you the wrong tree
• Soil: Prefers slightly acid to neutral. On deep caliche it can go chlorotic. pH above 7.8, plant chinquapin oak instead
• Sun: Full sun

Texas care notes

• Spacing: 20 to 30 ft in a hedgerow, 30 to 40 ft for an open mast plot
• Plot math: 12 trees at 30 ft spacing = about 360 running feet of field edge. 25 trees at 40 ft spacing = about one acre
• Browse protection: Deer will strip a 4 ft oak overnight. Cage it the day you plant. Our Deer Guard + Stake Kit exists for exactly this
• Oak wilt: Do not prune any oak in Texas between February 1 and June 30. Paint any wound within 30 minutes year-round

This is a pre-sell. We take your order, then our crew makes the Louisiana nursery run, grades every tree against the spec above, and boxes it. Your order ships within 21 days of purchase (25-Tree Acre Packs: within 30 days), which lands your trees inside the Texas fall planting window.

If we cannot ship inside that window we will email you before it closes with a revised date and a one-click cancel link. If the new date is 30 days or less past the original, you can wait or cancel, your choice. If we need more than 30 days, your order is cancelled and refunded automatically unless you tell us to hold it. Refunds go back to your original card within 7 business days. This is the FTC Mail Order Rule (16 CFR Part 435) and we would rather you use it than be surprised.

The spec is the promise

Measure your tree against the "What actually ships" numbers above on the day it arrives. If it misses the spec, photograph it and we refund you in full and you keep the tree. We are not going to send you a stick and a photograph of somebody else's oak.
